Hyena and Wilddogs in one day

3. July 2018

After three warm nights at the Elephant Trail Guesthouse we jumped back into our camper to stay at the Muchenje campsite with a beautiful view on the Chobe River.

And as we had learned the hard way that a self-drive safari is not that easy at Chobe NP we booked a game drive for the evening and one for the next morning – the golden hour and the blue hour. With us was a Swiss couple from Bern who were on their holiday and we really enjoyed their company after all the private time we had the weeks before.

In the golden hour we saw quite a lot of game but our absolute highlight was the hyena we were able to observe on our way out. The only hyena we had seen so far was on our second day in Kruger NP and it was sleeping. But this one was totally awake and on the search for food. Their long neck looks unusual and they have this notorious appearance. But maybe that is also a bit Disney’s fault as they had received the meanest character in Lion King.

Our drive in the blue hour the next morning was accompanied by the Swiss couple and not less filled with highlights. We first saw two bat-eared foxes on the hunt and later three wild dogs involved in the same activity.

In the evening we tried to watch Switzerland playing Sweden during the best of 16 at the world cup but with the poor internet we had even the live ticker wasn’t really live. Switzerland lost nevertheless and we enjoyed the sundown on the communal terrace with a beautiful view over the Chobe River and a beer.
